Oral Exam (10 minutes): A conversation about personal topics followed by a discussion based on a detailed study of a cultural issue or text.

Written Exam (2 hours and 15 minutes): This consists of three sections—listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and written expression in Chinese. Together, these exams contribute 50% to your final study score.

Your final study score is made up of School-Assessed Coursework (SACs) and external assessments.

‍Unit 3 SACs contribute 25%, Unit 4 SACs contribute 25%, and the final written and oral exams make up the remaining 50%.

Assessments test listening, reading, writing, speaking, and the ability to understand and use Chinese in a variety of contexts.

VCE Chinese can be challenging due to its focus on mastering character writing, grammar structures, and tones. However, it is designed for students with prior experience in learning Chinese as a second language, not native speakers. With consistent practice across all four language skills, the subject is very manageable and rewarding.

Scoring a 40+ is definitely achievable with regular practice and effective exam preparation. Students who consistently practise listening and speaking, write clearly and accurately, and refine their understanding of Chinese texts tend to perform well. The subject’s strong scaling also means high performance is especially well rewarded.

Tutoring focuses on improving your fluency, accuracy, and confidence across all language skills. Sessions often include vocabulary building, grammar reinforcement, oral conversation practice, and writing correction. Tutors can also help with SAC preparation and detailed study discussion practice for the oral exam.

VCE Chinese generally scales significantly up due to the strength of its cohort. A raw score of 30 may scale to around 38, and a 40 may scale to 48 or higher, depending on the year. This strong scaling reflects the subject’s difficulty and the high proficiency often required to succeed.
