Tutoring is extremely common in Australia - it is estimates that 1 in 7 students are getting tutoring. The majority of students get tutoring from recently graduated students. But choosing a qualified tutor—someone with formal training, educational credentials, and experience in teaching—can make a significant difference in a student’s academic journey. In this article, we explore the key benefits of working with a qualified tutor, and why it’s a worthwhile investment for families across Australia.

What Is a Qualified Tutor?

A qualified tutor typically refers to a tutor who has completed a teaching degree, holds educational certifications, or has formal training in pedagogy and curriculum delivery. Unlike casual tutors, who may be high-achieving students or part-time helpers, qualified tutors bring professional experience and have dedicated their careers to working with young people.

At Apex Tuition Australia, for example, we have two types of tutors as part of our professional service:

  1. Qualified teachers: long-tenured teachers with educational degrees and many years of teaching students in schools in Australia:
  2. Top 1% tutors: our best tutors with incredible academic results (99.00+), 500+ hours of tutoring experience, 5+ years and 50+ five star reviews

At Apex Tuition Australia, we have a professional tutoring service which is our premium tutoring service, to find out more about this service we have put together this guide.

Benefits of Tutoring With A Qualified Tutor

Deep Knowledge of the Australian Curriculum

One of the most important advantages of working with a qualified tutor is their in-depth knowledge of the curriculum—whether it's the VCE, HSC, QCE, WACE, or IB. They are familiar not just with the content, but with how it’s taught, assessed, and applied in exams and assignments.

This means they can:

  • Align tutoring sessions with the school syllabus
  • Focus on what's most important for assessments
  • Teach exam techniques that reflect current standards

For example, a qualified HSC English Advanced tutor will understand how to break down a Module B essay, structure a comparative analysis for Module A, and teach effective textual analysis for unseen texts—precisely because they’ve taught these topics before.

Experience Working With Different Types of Students

Every student learns differently. A major benefit of a qualified tutor is their ability to adapt to individual learning styles and work with students from diverse backgrounds—including those with learning difficulties, language barriers, or behavioural challenges.

Qualified tutors are trained in:

  • Differentiated instruction
  • Classroom management techniques
  • Building rapport with reluctant or anxious learners
  • Supporting students with ADHD, dyslexia, or autism

This means they are more equipped to handle situations that a less experienced tutor might struggle with, ensuring a positive and productive learning experience.

Proven Track Record of Success

Because qualified tutors often come from a background in teaching or education, they bring a proven history of helping students succeed. Their results aren't just anecdotal—they're based on years of experience improving outcomes across different levels and abilities.

Whether it’s boosting a student’s ATAR by 10 points or helping a Year 9 student develop better study habits, these tutors understand the steps required to produce measurable academic progress.

When you’re investing in tutoring, it’s reassuring to know you’re working with someone who has done it successfully, again and again.

Structured, Theoretical Approach to Learning

Qualified tutors don't just know their subject—they know how to teach it. Thanks to their training in educational theory and pedagogy, they bring structure, intentionality, and long-term planning to each session.

This means sessions are not just reactive (helping with this week’s homework), but proactive, working towards long-term goals like:

  • Building foundational understanding
  • Developing independent learning skills
  • Preparing strategically for assessments

They are also more likely to use evidence-based strategies—like spaced repetition, formative assessment, and retrieval practice—that are proven to improve memory retention and academic performance.

Better Communication with Schools and Parents

Qualified tutors often speak the same language as your child’s teachers. They understand report comments, school systems, assessment criteria, and how to interpret school-provided feedback. This allows for more effective collaboration between tutor, school, and family.

Parents also benefit from clear, professional communication regarding their child’s progress, challenges, and goals. This partnership fosters accountability and keeps everyone aligned.

Confidence and Motivation Boost for Students

Many students come to tutoring not just with knowledge gaps, but with confidence issues. A qualified tutor knows how to scaffold learning, celebrate small wins, and build a growth mindset.

As students begin to grasp difficult topics with the guidance of an expert, they naturally become more engaged, motivated, and self-assured. This can lead to a positive ripple effect in their other subjects and in their general attitude towards school.

How to Find a Qualified Tutor in Australia

When looking for a tutor, consider the following:

  • Are they a qualified teacher or hold a relevant degree?
  • Do they have experience with the specific curriculum (VCE, HSC, QCE, etc.)?
  • Can they provide testimonials or results from past students?
  • Do they have a Working With Children Check (WWCC)?
  • Do they offer personalised, structured lesson plans?

At Apex Tuition Australia, we carefully vet all our tutors to ensure they meet the highest standards. To apply to get a qualified tutor, please submit your application here or to find out check out this article where we explain more about our qualified tutor service.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
