This worksheet builds practical time skills, teaching students to solve duration problems using 12- and 24-hour time across multiple Australian time zones. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- 24-hour time never uses am/pm — it counts 00:00 (midnight) through to 23:59.
- To convert 12-hour pm times (except 12 pm) to 24-hour time, add 12 to the hour.
- Australia has three mainland time zones (standard time): awst (Perth, utc+8), acst (Adelaide, utc+9:30), aest (Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane, utc+10).
- To convert between time zones, find the difference in their utc offset and add or subtract that many hours.
- When adding a duration crosses midnight, the time "wraps around" past 23:59 back to 00:00 — and moves to the next day.
