English is the only compulsory subject in the HSC, every student must complete at least 2 units of an English course. But which course you choose matters enormously, both for your ATAR and for two years of your academic life. The difference between English Standard and English Advanced is not just difficulty, it is a fundamentally different experience of what English study looks like.

This guide walks you through every HSC English course, who each one is designed for, how they compare, and how to make the right decision for your situation.

The HSC English Courses: An Overview

NSW students have the following English options:

  1. English Studies (2 units — Board Endorsed, does not contribute to ATAR)
  2. English EAL/D (2 units — for students whose first language is not English)
  3. English Standard (2 units)
  4. English Advanced (2 units)
  5. English Extension 1 (1 unit, on top of Advanced — Years 11 and 12)
  6. English Extension 2 (1 unit, on top of Extension 1 — Year 12 only)

The most common pathway for students targeting a competitive ATAR is English Advanced, with Extension 1 and Extension 2 available for strong writers who want additional challenge and scaling.

English Standard

What Is It?

English Standard is designed for students who want to develop their reading, writing, and communication skills but find the more demanding analytical and critical work of Advanced English challenging. It covers a range of texts across different forms and contexts, with an emphasis on developing confidence in English use and understanding.

What Is Covered?

English Standard students study texts across a range of modules, including:

  • Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences (shared with Advanced)
  • Module A: Language, Identity and Culture
  • Module B: Close Study of Literature
  • Module C: The Craft of Writing

Students are required to study prose fiction, poetry, film, and non-fiction texts, and to write analytically and creatively.

Who Is It For?

English Standard is suited to students who:

  • Find English Advanced content genuinely overwhelming or inaccessible
  • Are not targeting an ATAR that requires a strong English scaling contribution
  • Are pursuing vocational or practical pathways where Advanced English is not necessary
  • Want to develop solid functional English skills without the pressure of the advanced course

How Does It Scale?

English Standard scales more modestly than English Advanced. For students who are genuinely better suited to Standard, a strong Standard result is absolutely worth more than a poor Advanced result. However, for students who are on the boundary — capable of either course but unsure — English Advanced is almost always the better strategic choice.

English Advanced

What Is It?

English Advanced is the mainstream HSC English course for students targeting competitive ATARs. It is significantly more demanding than Standard — requiring deeper analytical thinking, more sophisticated essay writing, and engagement with complex literary and theoretical ideas.

What Is Covered?

English Advanced students study four modules:

  • Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences (shared with Standard)
  • Module A: Textual Conversations (studying two texts in dialogue with each other)
  • Module B: Critical Study of Literature (an in-depth study of a single prescribed text)
  • Module C: The Craft of Writing (creative and analytical writing tasks)

The prescribed texts in Advanced English include canonical works of literature, contemporary Australian writing, poetry, film, and non-fiction. Students are expected to write with sophistication, use precise textual evidence, and engage analytically with complex ideas.

Who Is It For?

English Advanced is suited to students who:

  • Performed solidly in English throughout Years 9 and 10 (consistently achieving B or above)
  • Are comfortable reading and analysing complex texts
  • Can write structured, analytical essays with a clear argument
  • Are targeting an ATAR of 80 or above — at this level, Advanced scaling makes a meaningful difference

How Does It Scale?

English Advanced scales significantly better than Standard. Given that English is compulsory and that 2 units of English must be included in your ATAR calculation, choosing a well-scaling English course can make a real difference to your final ranking.

English Extension 1

What Is It?

English Extension 1 is a 1-unit course studied alongside English Advanced in both Years 11 and 12. It is designed for students who have a genuine passion for English, strong analytical skills, and an appetite for literary theory, philosophical ideas, and complex intertextual analysis.

What Is Covered?

Extension 1 is organised around a different "elective" each year, which changes focus regularly. Past electives have included topics like "After the Bomb," "Romanticism," and "Literary Worlds." Students are expected to read widely and independently, engage with theoretical frameworks, and produce sophisticated extended responses that demonstrate a high level of intellectual engagement with texts.

Who Is It For?

English Extension 1 is suited to students who:

  • Excel in English Advanced and find the standard course relatively straightforward
  • Enjoy reading, thinking, and writing about literature at a deeper level
  • Are interested in studying English, Law, Arts, or humanities at university
  • Can manage the additional workload of Extension without compromising their other subjects

How Does It Scale?

Extension 1 scales well — better than Advanced on its own. For strong English students, adding Extension 1 is a smart ATAR strategy. However, the scaling benefit is only realised if you perform well. A mediocre Extension 1 result may not contribute meaningfully to your ATAR.

English Extension 2

What Is It?

English Extension 2 is available only in Year 12 and requires enrolment in Extension 1. It is the most demanding English course in the HSC — and arguably the most creative. Rather than studying prescribed texts, students produce a substantial major work of their own: a piece of original writing (fiction, poetry, script, creative non-fiction, or a critical essay) accompanied by a critical reflection.

What Is Covered?

The major work in Extension 2 is a 6,000–8,000 word piece of original writing (or equivalent for other forms). Students develop this work across the year under the guidance of their teacher, drawing on their study of the Extension 1 elective and their wider independent reading.

Who Is It For?

English Extension 2 is for students who:

  • Are deeply passionate about creative writing, literature, or critical theory
  • Are disciplined and self-directed enough to manage a year-long independent project
  • Are already performing at the top of their cohort in Advanced and Extension 1
  • Have a clear creative vision for a substantial original work

It is not for students who are looking for a scaling shortcut — it is genuinely demanding, requires sustained independent effort, and the marking is rigorous. But for the right student, it is one of the most rewarding and distinctive things you can do in the HSC.

How to Decide: A Quick Decision Framework

If you... Consider...
Find English genuinely difficult or are not targeting a competitive ATAR English Standard
Are solid at English and want to maximise your ATAR contribution English Advanced
Excel at English and enjoy literary analysis and theory English Advanced + Extension 1
Are a talented and disciplined writer with a creative project in mind Advanced + Extension 1 + Extension 2
Learned English as a second language or studied overseas English EAL/D

As with Maths, if you are on the boundary, attempt the higher course in Year 11. You can step down from Advanced to Standard before Year 12 begins if needed — but you cannot step up later.

A Note on the Common Module

Both English Standard and English Advanced students study the Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences in Year 12. This is the one area where the two cohorts are directly compared — both groups sit the same exam section for this module. This makes performance in the Common Module particularly important for Advanced students, as it is the most direct measure against which your result is placed in context.

How a Tutor Can Help

HSC English rewards students who have a clear understanding of how to construct an argument, how to use textual evidence precisely, and how to write with sophistication under exam pressure. These are learnable skills — and a good tutor accelerates that learning significantly.

At Apex Tuition Australia, our HSC English tutors are specialists who achieved outstanding English results themselves. They know how to teach essay structure, how to approach unseen texts, and what markers are looking for in top-band responses. Whether you are working toward Band 5 in Standard or Band 6 in Extension 1, we can help you get there.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

  2. Ssss

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
