This worksheet teaches students to count forwards and backwards by fractions, change between mixed numerals and improper fractions, and read and mark fractions on number lines. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Counting by quarters: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 (= 1), 5/4 (= 1 1/4), 6/4 (= 1 2/4) …
- A mixed numeral has a whole number and a fraction, like 1 3/4. An improper fraction has a top number bigger than the bottom, like 7/4.
- On a number line, split each whole into equal parts. Quarters means 4 equal parts between each pair of whole numbers.
- 10 tenths make 1 whole, so counting by tenths goes 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.1 …
What your child will practise:
- Counting forwards and backwards by fractions.
- Changing improper fractions to mixed numerals and back.
- Reading and marking fractions and mixed numerals on number lines.
- Using parallel number lines to find fractions in the same position.
- Solving counting problems with fractions.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
