This worksheet teaches students to round numbers and money, make quick estimates, and use them to decide whether a calculation, a shopping total or a budget makes sense. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- To round to the nearest 10, find the two tens the number sits between and choose the closer one. 47 rounds to 50.
- A number exactly halfway (like 85) rounds up, to 90.
- An estimate is a quick, close answer, found by rounding the numbers first.
- When budgeting, round prices up. Then the real total will be less than your estimate, so you won't run short.
What your child will practise:
- Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, and money to the nearest dollar.
- Estimating sums, differences and products.
- Using an estimate to decide whether an answer is reasonable.
- Finding two amounts that an answer must lie between.
- Checking change and budgets with estimates.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
