This worksheet teaches students to find lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry in shapes, letters and designs, and to complete symmetrical patterns on a grid. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- A line of symmetry (mirror line) splits a shape into two halves that match exactly when folded.
- A shape has rotational symmetry if it looks the same after turning it less than a full turn.
- The order of rotational symmetry is how many times a shape looks the same in one full turn. A square has order 4.
- If a shape only looks the same after a full turn, it has order 1: no rotational symmetry.
What your child will practise:
- Counting the lines of symmetry of shapes and letters.
- Finding the order of rotational symmetry.
- Completing patterns using one or two mirror lines.
- Drawing shapes with a given amount of symmetry.
- Explaining why a shape does or doesn't have symmetry.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
