This worksheet teaches students to read and make pictographs where one symbol stands for several items, and column graphs with a scale, including reading values between lines. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- In a many-to-one pictograph, each symbol stands for more than one item. The key tells you how many.
- Part of a symbol stands for part of the key: if one symbol = 2, half a symbol = 1.
- A column graph has a scale on the vertical axis. Read the top of each column across to the scale.
- Categorical data uses words (favourite fruit). Discrete numerical data is counted (number of pets).
What your child will practise:
- Reading pictographs using the key, including part symbols.
- Reading column graphs, including values between labelled lines.
- Comparing categories, including finding totals.
- Working out how many symbols to draw for a number.
- Choosing a sensible scale for a graph.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
