This worksheet builds computational thinking, teaching students to follow and write flow charts and spreadsheet formulas that make number patterns, and to describe the patterns they see. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- An algorithm is a list of steps to follow in order. Some steps ask a yes/no question and send you to different steps.
- A flow chart shows an algorithm with boxes and arrows. Diamonds hold the yes/no questions.
- "Add the same number each time" makes a pattern of multiples (when it starts at that number), like 4, 8, 12, 16 …
- In a spreadsheet, a formula like =A1*4 can be filled down to make a whole pattern at once.
What your child will practise:
- Following a flow chart to make a list of numbers.
- Finding the rule of a number pattern to continue it.
- Deciding whether a number belongs to a pattern.
- Reading and predicting spreadsheet patterns.
- Describing patterns in the digits.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
