This worksheet teaches students why numbers are odd or even, and how to use the patterns for adding, subtracting and multiplying odd and even numbers to check whether an answer could be right. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- An even number can be shared into 2 equal groups, or made into pairs, with nothing left over. An odd number always has 1 left over.
- Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.
- Adding: even + even = even, odd + odd = even, odd + even = odd. Subtracting follows the same pattern.
- Multiplying: odd × odd = odd. If any number being multiplied is even, the answer is even.
What your child will practise:
- Deciding whether a number is odd or even, explaining why.
- Predicting whether a sum, difference or product is odd or even without working it out.
- Using odd and even to check whether an answer could be right.
- Following a flow chart that sorts numbers into odd and even.
- Investigating patterns, such as adding three numbers in a row.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
