This worksheet builds mental maths, teaching students quick strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, such as jumps, friendly numbers, doubling and halving, and area models. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Jump strategy: add or subtract the tens first, then the ones, on an empty number line.
- Compensation: change a number to make it easy, then fix it. 199 + 245 = 200 + 245 − 1.
- Doubling and halving: 5 × 18 = 10 × 9. Double one number and halve the other; the answer stays the same.
- Area model (split strategy): 16 × 4 = 10 × 4 + 6 × 4 = 40 + 24 = 64.
What your child will practise:
- Adding and subtracting using jumps and compensation.
- Multiplying using doubling, halving and splitting.
- Dividing by halving, or by thinking of the multiplication fact.
- Using compatible numbers that make 10 or 100.
- Representing problems with bar models and number sentences.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
