This worksheet teaches students to turn real-life problems into number sentences, choose the right operation, and solve money problems such as costs, income and profit at a sausage sizzle. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- A number sentence shows the problem using numbers and operations, like 4 × 6 = 24.
- Add or subtract when amounts are joined, taken away or compared. Multiply or divide when there are equal groups.
- Income is the money you take in. Profit is the income left after the costs are paid: profit = income − costs.
- 100 cents = 1 dollar, so 3600 cents = $36.
What your child will practise:
- Writing a number sentence for a word problem.
- Choosing between adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.
- Solving money problems, including income, costs and profit.
- Using bar models for "times as many" problems.
- Explaining what the answer means in the situation.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
