This worksheet introduces decimals, teaching students to read and write tenths and hundredths, rename them using place value, and use them for money and measurements like 2.75 m. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- The decimal point separates the whole numbers from the parts of a whole. The first place after the point is tenths; the second is hundredths.
- 1 whole = 10 tenths, and 1 tenth = 10 hundredths. So 1 whole = 100 hundredths.
- On a 100-grid that shows 1 whole, each column is 1 tenth (0.1) and each small square is 1 hundredth (0.01).
- Money and measures use the same places: in $2.75 and 2.75 m, the 7 means 7 tenths and the 5 means 5 hundredths.
What your child will practise:
- Naming the value of each digit in a decimal.
- Writing tenths and hundredths as decimals.
- Renaming decimals, e.g. 0.25 as 2 tenths and 5 hundredths, or 25 hundredths.
- Reading decimals on number lines and 100-grids.
- Using decimals for money and for measurements in metres and litres.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
