This worksheet teaches students to convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time and solve practical problems with timetables, flights and elapsed time, including times past midnight. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- 12-hour time uses am (midnight to midday) and pm (midday to midnight).
- 24-hour time counts the hours from 00 to 23, with no am or pm. It is written with 4 digits, like 07:30 or 19:45.
- For pm times from 1:00 pm, add 12 to the hour: 3:45 pm → 15:45. For 24-hour times from 13:00, take away 12: 21:00 → 9:00 pm.
- Midnight is 00:00 and midday is 12:00. So 12:20 am is 00:20, and 12:30 pm is 12:30.
What your child will practise:
- Converting 12-hour time to 24-hour time.
- Converting 24-hour time to 12-hour time.
- Ordering times written in both systems.
- Finding a finishing time, including past midnight.
- Finding how long something takes (elapsed time).
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
