This worksheet teaches students to translate, reflect and rotate shapes on a grid, describe what changes and what stays the same, and find lines and orders of symmetry. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- A translation slides a shape. A reflection flips it over a mirror line. A rotation turns it around a point.
- After any of these, the shape's size and shape stay the same. Its position, and sometimes its orientation (which way it faces), can change.
- A shape has line symmetry if a mirror line folds it onto itself. A regular shape with n sides has n lines of symmetry.
- A shape has rotational symmetry if it looks the same after a turn of less than a full turn. The order is how many times it looks the same in one full turn.
What your child will practise:
- Naming a transformation as a translation, reflection or rotation.
- Performing transformations on a grid, giving the new coordinates.
- Describing what changes and what stays the same.
- Counting lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry.
- Combining two transformations.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
