This worksheet teaches students to round and estimate to check whether answers make sense, including money totals, budgets and calculator results. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- To round, look at the digit to the right of the place you are rounding to. 5 or more → round up; 4 or less → round down.
- An estimate is a quick, close answer. If an exact answer is far from the estimate, check the working.
- For a budget, round every price up. If the rounded-up total fits, the real total will fit too.
- In Australia, cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5 cents (there are no 1c or 2c coins). Card payments are not rounded.
What your child will practise:
- Rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100, and money to the nearest dollar.
- Estimating sums, differences, products and quotients.
- Using an estimate to decide whether an answer is reasonable.
- Choosing how to round for the situation, e.g. rounding up for a budget.
- Deciding when an exact answer is needed and when an estimate will do.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
