This worksheet teaches students to model real-life problems with number sentences, choose the right operations, and compare options such as deals, phone plans and ticket prices. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Additive situations join or separate amounts: use + or −.
- Multiplicative situations have equal groups, rates or sharing: use × or ÷.
- Many problems need more than one step. Write a number sentence for each step.
- Always interpret the answer: "7.5 pencils" doesn't make sense, so you can buy 7 pencils.
What your child will practise:
- Choosing the operation that matches the situation.
- Writing a problem as a number sentence.
- Solving multi-step problems, including money problems.
- Comparing two options (deals, plans, prices).
- Explaining the answer in terms of the situation.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
