This worksheet teaches students to sort data into types, check data for mistakes, find the mode, and describe the shape of a data set, including spreadsheet data. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Categorical data uses words or groups. Nominal data has no order (favourite colour); ordinal data has an order (T-shirt size S, M, L, or a 1–5 star rating).
- Discrete numerical data is counted in whole numbers (number of pets, goals scored).
- The mode is the value or category that appears most often. A data set can have more than one mode.
- The shape of the data describes where the values bunch up: in the middle, at one end, in two groups, or with an unusual value far from the rest.
What your child will practise:
- Deciding whether data is nominal, ordinal or discrete numerical.
- Making and reading a frequency table.
- Finding the mode, including when there are two modes.
- Spotting data that has been entered wrongly.
- Describing and comparing the shape of data sets.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
