This worksheet builds computational thinking, teaching students to follow flow-chart algorithms with yes/no decisions to test factors, find the HCF and LCM, and describe the patterns that appear. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- An algorithm is a list of steps that you follow in order. Some steps are decisions with a yes/no answer.
- The highest common factor (HCF) is the biggest number that is a factor of both numbers. The HCF of 12 and 18 is 6.
- The lowest common multiple (LCM) is the smallest number that is a multiple of both numbers. The LCM of 4 and 6 is 12.
- In a spreadsheet, a formula like =A1+7 can be "filled down" to make a list of multiples of 7.
What your child will practise:
- Following an algorithm with yes/no decisions, recording the output.
- Generating multiples, describing the patterns.
- Finding the HCF and LCM of two or three numbers.
- Using the repeated-subtraction algorithm to find the HCF.
- Solving "when do they happen together?" problems using the LCM.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
