This worksheet teaches students to compare and order decimals with up to three decimal places using place value, and to locate them on number lines, with real contexts like race times and long jumps. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- After the decimal point the places are tenths (0.1), hundredths (0.01) and thousandths (0.001).
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right: 1 tenth = 10 hundredths, and 1 hundredth = 10 thousandths.
- Putting zeros on the end of a decimal does not change its value: 0.6 = 0.60 = 0.600.
- To compare decimals, compare the whole numbers first, then the tenths, then the hundredths, then the thousandths.
What your child will practise:
- Naming the value of a digit in a decimal with up to 3 decimal places.
- Writing a decimal from its place-value parts.
- Comparing two decimals using < and >.
- Ordering a list of decimals, including numbers greater than one.
- Locating decimals on a number line, including halfway points.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
