This worksheet teaches students to find the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes, including L-shapes and paths, by adding sides and counting square tiles. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape. Add every side length.
- A regular shape has all sides equal, so its perimeter is one side × the number of sides.
- Area is the amount of surface a shape covers. It is measured in square units: cm² (square centimetres) or m² (square metres).
- If square tiles are laid in rows, the area is the number of rows × the number of tiles in each row.
What your child will practise:
- Finding the perimeter of rectangles, regular shapes and irregular shapes.
- Finding area by counting squares, including half squares.
- Finding area using rows of square tiles.
- Splitting an L-shape into rectangles to find its area.
- Comparing shapes with the same perimeter or the same area.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
