This worksheet teaches students to use coordinates and compass directions on a grid map to locate places, describe moves and find the corners of shapes. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- A coordinate grid has a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. They meet at the origin, (0, 0).
- A point is written as (across, up), in brackets with a comma: (3, 5) means 3 across and 5 up.
- The axes are number lines, so the lines are numbered, not the spaces between them.
- Moving right or left changes the first number. Moving up or down changes the second number.
What your child will practise:
- Reading and writing coordinates in the correct order.
- Finding a new position after a move (right, left, up, down).
- Describing the move from one point to another.
- Finding missing corners of squares and rectangles.
- Moving a whole shape to new coordinates.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
