This worksheet teaches students to compare and order fractions with the same and related denominators, change between mixed numerals and improper fractions, and place them on number lines. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- With the same denominator, the bigger numerator is the bigger fraction: 5/8 > 3/8.
- Denominators are related when one is a multiple of the other, like 4 and 8, 3 and 12, or 5 and 10.
- To compare related fractions, rename one so the denominators match: 3/4 = 6/8 (multiply top and bottom by 2).
- A mixed numeral has a whole number and a fraction: 1 3/4 = 4/4 + 3/4 = 7/4 (an improper fraction).
What your child will practise:
- Comparing fractions with the same denominator.
- Renaming a fraction to match a related denominator.
- Converting between mixed numerals and improper fractions.
- Ordering sets of fractions and mixed numerals.
- Locating fractions and mixed numerals on a number line.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
