This worksheet teaches students to add and subtract decimals to thousandths by lining up place values, and to use rounding and estimation to check that their answers make sense. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right: ones, tenths (0.1), hundredths (0.01), thousandths (0.001).
- When adding or subtracting decimals, line up the decimal points so each digit sits under the same place value.
- You can put zeros on the end of a decimal without changing its value: 4.8 = 4.80 = 4.800.
- Rounding each number to the nearest whole number gives a quick estimate to check an answer.
What your child will practise:
- Adding and subtracting decimals with the same number of decimal places.
- Adding and subtracting decimals with different numbers of decimal places (fill gaps with zeros).
- Subtracting a decimal from a whole number (e.g. 10 − 3.46).
- Estimating by rounding, then check whether an answer is reasonable.
- Solving money and measurement problems, including sports records.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
