This worksheet teaches students to use the order of operations with brackets, and to find missing numbers in number sentences by working backwards with inverse operations. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- The order of operations is an agreed set of rules, so everyone gets the same answer: Brackets first, then × and ÷ (left to right), then + and − (left to right).
- The equals sign means both sides have the same value: 6 × 7 = 50 − 8 is a true number sentence.
- A box □ or triangle Δ stands for a missing number.
- Inverse (opposite) operations undo each other: + undoes −, and × undoes ÷.
- To find a missing number, work backwards: undo the operations in the reverse order.
What your child will practise:
- Using the order of operations, including brackets.
- Finding a missing number in a one-step number sentence.
- Finding a missing number in a two-step number sentence by working backwards.
- Placing brackets to make a number sentence true.
- Writing a number sentence for a word problem and solve it.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
