This worksheet teaches students to read bus and train timetables in 24-hour time, work out the duration of journeys and events, and plan an itinerary for a day out or a sports carnival. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- A timetable lists the times a bus, train or ferry leaves (departs) or arrives at each stop. An itinerary is a plan listing activities and their times.
- Timetables usually use 24-hour time: 08:05 = 8:05 am, 14:40 = 2:40 pm, 22:50 = 10:50 pm.
- Duration is how long something takes. There are 60 minutes in 1 hour.
- To find a duration, count on: first to the next full hour, then whole hours, then the leftover minutes.
- Journeys that pass midnight continue into the next day (23:59 is followed by 00:00).
What your child will practise:
- Reading times from a timetable and convert between 12- and 24-hour time.
- Finding how often a service runs and how long a journey takes.
- Choosing the right service to arrive on time, including waiting times and connections.
- Adding durations to a start time to build a schedule (such as a sports carnival).
- Comparing journeys and plan an itinerary for a day out.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
