This worksheet teaches students to convert between metric units of length, mass and capacity, from millimetres to kilometres and millilitres to megalitres, and to solve practical problems with decimal measurements. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- Length: 10 mm = 1 cm, 100 cm = 1 m, 1000 m = 1 km.
- Mass: 1000 mg = 1 g, 1000 g = 1 kg, 1000 kg = 1 t (tonne).
- Capacity: 1000 mL = 1 L, 1000 L = 1 kL, 1000 kL = 1 ml (megalitre).
- Prefixes tell you the size: milli- = one thousandth, centi- = one hundredth, kilo- = one thousand, mega- = one million.
- Big unit → small unit: multiply (you need more of the small units). Small unit → big unit: divide.
What your child will practise:
- Converting between mm, cm, m and km.
- Converting between mg, g, kg and t.
- Converting between mL, L, kL and ml.
- Comparing and ordering measurements given in different units.
- Solving problems that need a conversion before calculating.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
