This worksheet teaches students to locate points in all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane, including on axes with decimal scales, and describe how coordinates change when a point moves. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- The x-axis runs across and the y-axis runs up and down. They cross at the origin (0, 0).
- A point is written (x, y): x (across) always comes first, y (up or down) second.
- Moving right adds to x; moving left subtracts from x. The y-coordinate stays the same.
- Moving up adds to y; moving down subtracts from y. The x-coordinate stays the same.
- The axes are number lines, and their scale can go up in whole numbers, 0.5s, 0.25s or any step, depending on the purpose.
What your child will practise:
- Plotting and reading points in all 4 quadrants.
- Describing a move (e.g. 5 units right) from the change in coordinates.
- Finding the new coordinates after a move.
- Reading coordinates on axes with decimal scales.
- Using coordinates to draw and complete polygons, and to follow movement instructions.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
