This worksheet teaches students to add and subtract fractions by making equivalent fractions with the same denominator, using everyday contexts like recipes and sharing pizza. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- You can only add or subtract fractions when the pieces are the same size, which means the denominators are the same.
- With the same denominator, add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator: 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7.
- Related denominators: one denominator is a multiple of the other (2 and 8, 3 and 6, 5 and 10). Rename the smaller one: 1/2 = 4/8.
- The lowest common denominator is the smallest number both denominators divide into. For 2 and 3 it is 6.
- Always simplify your answer, and write fractions bigger than 1 as mixed numbers: 9/8 = 1 1/8.
What your child will practise:
- Adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
- Adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators by renaming one fraction.
- Subtracting a fraction from 1 whole.
- Adding and subtracting mixed numbers in simple cases.
- Solving problems with fractions, such as recipes, pizzas and gardens.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
