This worksheet teaches students to find a fraction, decimal or percentage of an amount, including working out discounts and sale prices and comparing deals between shops. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- "Of" means multiply. 1/4 of 24 means 24 ÷ 4 = 6.
- To find a non-unit fraction, find one part first: 1/3 of 45 = 15, so 2/3 of 45 = 30 and 4/3 of 45 = 60.
- Percent means "out of 100". 50% = 1/2, 25% = 1/4, 10% = 1/10, 1% = 1/100.
- Some percentages match simple fractions: 33 1/3% = 1/3, 66 2/3% = 2/3, 12.5% = 1/8.
- A percentage can be written as a decimal: 30% = 0.3, 15% = 0.15, 45% = 0.45.
- Discount = the amount taken off. Sale price = original price − discount.
What your child will practise:
- Finding a unit fraction (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/10) of an amount.
- Finding a non-unit fraction (2/3, 3/4, 4/3) of an amount.
- Finding 10%, 25% and 50% of an amount, then build other percentages from them (30% = 3 × 10%).
- Using fraction equivalents for percentages like 33 1/3%, 66 2/3% and 12.5%.
- Calculating discounts and sale prices, and compare deals.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
