This worksheet applies percentages to real financial contexts — GST, wages, discounts, simple interest and best-buy comparisons — through practical, everyday problems. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- GST (Goods and Services Tax) in Australia adds 10% to the pre-tax price of most goods and services.
- Wages can be calculated as hourly rate × hours worked; overtime is often paid at a higher rate (e.g. time-and-a-half = ×1.5).
- Simple interest formula: I = Prt, where P is the principal (amount invested/borrowed), r is the annual rate (as a decimal), and t is the time in years.
- Unit price (price per gram, per 100 g, per item) allows fair comparison between different package sizes — this is how "best buy" is judged.
- Profit is selling price − cost price; profit as a percentage is usually calculated relative to the cost price.
What your child will practise:
- Calculating GST and GST-inclusive prices using 10% of the pre-tax amount.
- Calculating wages from an hourly rate, including overtime pay at a higher rate.
- Applying the simple interest formula I = Prt to find interest, totals, or an unknown rate/time.
- Finding and compare unit prices to determine the better-value option ("best buy").
- Calculating profit, loss and percentage markup or discount relative to cost price.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
