The concepts it covers:
- An equation states that two expressions are equal — solving it means finding the value of the variable that makes this true.
- Whatever is done to one side of an equation must be done to the other, to keep it balanced.
- To undo an operation, apply its inverse: undo + with −, undo × with ÷, and vice versa.
- When the variable appears on both sides, first collect all variable terms on one side.
- Verify a solution by substituting it back into the original equation and checking both sides are equal.
What your child will practise:
- Undoing addition/subtraction first, then multiplication/division, working backwards through the equation.
- Expanding brackets before collecting like terms, if the equation contains any.
- Moving variable terms to one side and constants to the other by adding/subtracting them from both sides.
- Dividing both sides by the coefficient of the variable to isolate it.
