This worksheet builds fluency with the four operations — adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers — using efficient strategies. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- To add or subtract fractions, they need a common denominator first.
- To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
- To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (flip the second fraction and multiply).
- A mixed number (e.g. 2 1/4) combines a whole number and a fraction; convert to an improper fraction before multiplying or dividing.
- Always simplify a fraction answer to its lowest terms.
What your child will practise:
- Finding a common denominator to add or subtract fractions, then add/subtract the numerators.
- Multiplying fractions straight across: numerator × numerator, denominator × denominator.
- Dividing fractions by multiplying by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
- Converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions before multiplying or dividing.
- Applying fraction operations to real-world quantities — recipes, distances, capacities.
Every section opens with a worked example, and the download includes a full answer key with step-by-step solutions and teaching notes on the mistakes students most commonly make.
