This worksheet introduces key statistics, teaching students to calculate the mean, median, mode and range of a data set and use them to solve problems, including finding a missing value. The worksheet is split into warm-up questions, standard questions and then extension questions to test you.
The concepts it covers:
- The mean is the sum of all values divided by how many values there are.
- The median is the middle value when the data is sorted in order — average the two middle values if there's an even number of data points.
- The mode is the value (or values) that occurs most often.
- The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values: range = max − min.
- Mean, median and mode all describe the "centre" of a data set, but can give different values for the same data.
What your child will practise:
- Calculating the mean by adding all values and dividing by the count.
- Finding the median by sorting the data first, then locating the middle value (or averaging the two middle values).
- Finding the mode by identifying the most frequently occurring value.
- Calculating the range by subtracting the minimum from the maximum.
- Working backwards from a known mean to find a missing data value or a new sum.
